A quick guide to selecting environmentally conscious tapware

Choosing the right tapware is not just about style and functionality—it’s also an opportunity to reduce water waste and minimise environmental impact. Choosing environmentally conscious tapware not only helps conserve water and reduce waste but also ensures your home is equipped with durable, high-quality fixtures that stand the test of time. Here’s what to look for when selecting sustainable tapware for your home:

Materials

The materials that the tapware is made from can have a big impact on the longevity of the piece - making it less likely to need replacing. Both solid brass and stainless steel are good options as they are long-lasting and resistant to corrosion. Stainless steel 316 is also fully recyclable, making it an even better choice. However, you may struggle to find indoor tapware made from stainless steel 316 as these are usually reserved for outdoor ranges only.

Another thing to look out for is materials that are free from led and other harmful chemicals. Luckily, all tapware will be moving to completely lead-free by May 2026 as per new regulations. Many electroplated and powder-coated finishes can also contain VOCs and heavy metals. Stainless steel is again a good option as it is free from lead, and PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings on tapware tend to be the best option. At a minimum, tapware should be WaterMark-certified.

Water and energy efficiency

All tapware will have a WELS Rating - which stands for Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme. This rating is given by the number of stars, with 5-6 stars being the best for water savings. Tapware with aerators also reduce flow while maintaining water pressure, saving water without compromising performance.

Another tip is to look for tapware that helps you avoid turning the hot water on accidentally, which would then reduce energy consumption. A lot of kitchen mixers have the 'standard' position so that when you turn it on, it kicks on the hot water. Instead, look for mixers that have the 'standard' position as cold. In the bathroom, you may like to look at a progressive mixer which always turn on in cold mode.

Eco-conscious suppliers

Lastly, opt for suppliers who are local, environmentally conscious in their manufacturing process and who use recycled materials. Some of the ones we recommend are:

  • Astra Walker - Australian-made, lead-free, and offers raw brass finishes without harmful coatings

  • Sussex Taps – Made from recycled brass, with an in-house closed-loop recycling system.

  • Phoenix Tapware – Their Enviro316 Range has interior tapware made from stainless steel 316

By choosing water-efficient designs, durable materials, and ethical manufacturing, you can reduce your ecological footprint while enjoying a beautifully designed space. Thoughtful choices like these not only benefit the planet but also create a home that aligns with your values—one that is as responsible as it is refined.
