Your bathroom should be more than just functional — it should be a space that supports your wellbeing, invites calm into your daily routine, and feels entirely your own. Whether you’re starting or ending your day, this is often the one space where you can pause, breathe, and reconnect with yourself. In this post, we’ll explore how to thoughtfully design a bathroom that not only looks beautiful, but where every choice, from layout to lighting, supports the way you want to live.

Design with intention
The spaces that promote the most mindfulness and wellbeing are those designed specifically to suit your needs. Putting yourself and your rituals at the forefront of the design is the best way to create a functional bathroom that makes using it feel effortless and rejuvenating. Consider what your particular pain points are and what makes you feel your best. For example, if your biggest pain point is storage, you can prioritise a custom vanity and a shaving cabinet with hidden power points. Or your biggest pain point might be how cold the bathroom is in the mornings, and you might want to prioritise underfloor heating. You might then want add a large deep bath or a steam shower in the space for when you need a mindfulness ritual.
Selecting materials, fittings and fixtures
Similar to the point above, selecting materials, fittings and fixtures that suit your specific likes and taste is going to be the best way to create a space that feels like a personal sanctuary. However, something else you can draw upon is biophilic design - this is a design approach in which you integrate elements of nature into the space to help improve wellbeing. You can do this in your bathroom by using natural materials like stone and timbers, using earthy neutrals and calming greens or blues or incorporating more obvious nature motifs like a wallpaper featuring flowers or leaves.

Lighting the space
Lighting makes a massive difference to both, how a space functions and how it feels. Just like with any other space, I highly recommend layering light for different needs. In a bathroom, you will need general ceiling light, task lighting at the basin and then a softer option for unwinding. These don't need to be completely different lights either. A vanity sconce or a ceiling light dimmed down can be used as soft lights when having a relaxing bath or shower. Another good option are LED strips, which can be added to be underside of a vanity and/or shaving cabinet or within a shower and/or bath niche. And of course, it goes without saying that the best type of light during the day is sunlight. We always aim to make sure every bathroom we design has a window or skylight (both both!).
Insulation
Something you might not consider for a bathroom to feel calming and rejuvenating is insulation. Insulating your walls properly not only helps to maintain a more consistent and comfortable temperature, but it also helps with acoustics - minimising echos within the space itself, and helping to reduce sound between the bathroom and adjacent spaces. Lastly, a combination of insulation and proper ventilation will help to manage humidity, which protects against dangerous mould or mildew, and makes maintaining the space less of a hassle.
Whether you’re dreaming of long soaks in a deep bath, quiet mornings with natural light streaming in, or just a space that finally works the way it should — designing with intention is the first step. And we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
