How we transformed a small apartment for maximum functionality

Updated: Sep 2

When we first stepped inside this Coburg apartment, it was clear that the layout wasn’t keeping up with the growing needs of the family who lived there. Home to a couple and their two children (and their pets!), the apartment was well-loved but struggling to serve its purpose. The apartment had a two-bedroom layout, limited storage, a laundry layout that didn’t quite work, and a kitchen that lacked both bench space and storage. Our clients were ready to reimagine their space. They wanted a functional and inspiring home where every family member had room to breathe, where there was space to work and relax, and where their love for colour and nature could shine through. And that’s exactly what we set out to deliver.

One of the biggest priorities for this renovation was creating a third bedroom, so the children no longer had to share. With some smart spatial reconfiguration, we were able to carve out three comfortable bedrooms, each with its own built-in robe and custom shelving to maximise storage without taking up valuable floor space. We also introduced a dedicated study nook near the entry, giving the client a more suitable workspace away from the master bedroom and the main living areas.

Whilst creating a third bedroom meant removing a WIR and Ensuite, we were able to turn the existing bathroom into a much more functional space with a separate powder room. The two spaces are compact, but have plenty of storage. We were also able to include a bath in the bathroom, which it didn't previously have. In order to fit everything from the client's wish-list into the small apartment, a compromise had to be made for the laundry. Instead of having one laundry room, the clients chose to have the washing machine and dryer integrated into the kitchen joinery. A broom cupboard, storage shelving, and small sink were then included into the entry instead. While the sink may seem odd there, away from the washing machine and dryer, it is located next to a cleverly integrated litter box drawer - making it a great location for easy clean up of the litter box.

The original kitchen felt closed in and lacked storage, bench space, and cohesion. Whilst we kept almost the same footprint and layout, we were able to greatly improve the functionality of the space through added storage, increased bench space, and clever mechanisms. Inspired by a freestanding unit that the client had previously, we added a breakfast nook opposite the kitchen in which the door also acts as an extension of the benchtop. We also finished off this section with a small seating area which doubles as storage. By extending the engineered timber flooring into the kitchen (which previously had tiles), we visually expanded the space and created a more seamless, connected feel throughout the apartment.

Being located on the third floor, the apartment is nestled amongst lush tree canopies, which became the inspiration for the entire palette. Our clients loved green tones and weren’t afraid to embrace them. We curated a warm and inviting scheme that drew from the surrounding greenery, while maintaining a sense of lightness and openness. To achieve this we paired Laminex Bayleaf with Polytec Nordic Oak Woodmatt in the joinery throughout. We also introduced Meir Lustre Bronze for the tapware, bringing in a quiet touch of warmth. The tile selection of soft sandy tones mixed with green feature tiles then added plenty of texture and personality. These tones tie everything together and bring a sense of calm to the home.

What was once a dated, disconnected apartment is now a light-filled, functional and vibrant family home—a true reflection of the people who live there. Every design decision was made with their lifestyle in mind: the need for private spaces, a practical work area, efficient storage, and room to grow.

It’s proof that with thoughtful planning, small spaces can do so much more—and look beautiful doing it.

Have a wonderful week!
